While we’re still not out of the pandemic-woods yet, the BMX Triple Challenge was able to go down in Houston, Texas, alongside Monster Energy Supercross in the Fan Fest Zone. Traditionally an open invite event, restrictions meant that the riders were capped at 16, along with temperature checks and stern mask wearing and social distancing guidelines in place. Even with a small field of riders and a smaller crowd on hand, the Triple Challenge event went off as it always does… Judging from the level of riding and consistency, you never would’ve guessed that the riders were just coming off a ten-month break in competition.
The format for this event was “straight-to-finals” style consisting of four runs with each rider’s best run counting. The shake up this year is that additional points from the Best Trick Jam were factored into the rider’s over-all scores as well. In the end, it was a stacked Monster podium, with Andy Buckworth, Pat Casey, and Ryan Nyquist in the top three spots and Larry Edgar taking home the Best Trick win doing an unthinkable 360 over the second jump backward.
