Surfers across Europe, in particular Germany, will be pleased to know that a Wavegarden Cove is planned just 20 minutes from Düsseldorf.
Wavegarden announced that Krefeld City, in western Germany, will host a Cove. The new €25Million development by the Elakari Group anticipates completing the job by summer 2023.
The surf park’s location is key to attracting an estimated 200,000 surfers annually. At just a three hour drive from Frankfurt, the wave pool looks to attract surfers from throughout northwest Germany. Closer Dutch and Belgian surfers in Amsterdam and Brussels can jump in for a surf after a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
“Estimated to attract visitors to the Rhine-Ruhr region each year, our surfing lagoon will be placed at the heart of the project, which is themed on sports, leisure, wellness, camping, and gastronomy,” said Wavegarden.
Germany’s ocean-going surfers have to travel quite a bit to sate their stoke. Some go crossborder into The Netherlands or north to Denmark to find decent waves. For inland surfers in Munich, it means driving eight hours to Italy to score a rare winter Mediterannean swell.
Wavegarden´s co-founder, Karin Frisch, a German native, is equally delighted to know that her compatriots will have greater access to quality waves. “German surfers won’t need to travel as far to go surfing,” said Frisch. “Krefeld will have its own perfect surf beach with consistent, ocean-like waves suitable for all ages and performance levels.”
The Krefeld project joins wave pools planned for Berlin and Munich.
