Giornata finale al Newcastle Surfest 2016 dove sono stati incoronati i Campioni dell’evento di fronte a una folla da record per un evento del World Surf League (WSL) Tour Championship (CT) con gli australiani Matt Wilkinson e Sally Fitzgibbons ad ottenere la vittoria rispettivamente davanti al nostro portabandiera Leonardo Fioravanti e la campionessa Stephanie Gilmore. L’ultimo giorno si è svolto con le migliori condizioni della manifestazione con venti leggeri e onde pulite di quattro-sei piedi a Merewether Beach.
La vittoria della numero 1 del tabellone Fitzgibbons non è stata affatto facile, scontrandosi un sacco di concorrenti de Tour Championship (CT) passato e per finire battendosi nella finale infuocata con la 6 volte campionessa del Mondo Stephanie Gilmore.
La Fitzgibbons ha preso subito in mano il comando nella finale, gestendo un punteggio di 14.73 di heat con un con il suo solito surf potente. La Gilmore doveva ottenere un punteggio di 8.56 per vincere ma non è stata in grado di ottenere permettendo alla Fitzgibbons di conquistare la sua seconda vittoria al Newcastle Surfest.
L’australiano Wilkinson si è scontrato con il nostro Leonardo Fioravanti in finale. Leo si è battuto come un leone contro il più quotato Wilko, che da anni partecipa al World Surf league Tour Championship, non mollando mai e cercando di recuparare gli ottimi punteggi d’onda di Wilko. Comunque un secondo posto al primo evento QS6,000 del 2016 ci fa ben sperare per il proseguio della stagione e per le qualifiche nel World Tour.
The Champions of the 2016 Newcastle Surfest have been crowned in front of record crowds with World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) competitors Matt Wilkinson taking out the Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro and Sally Fitzgibbons winning the Taggart Women’s Pro. The Final day was held in some of the best conditions of the event with light winds and clean four-to-six foot waves at Merewether Beach.
Number One Seed Fitzgibbons’ win was not done easily, making it through a field packed with past and present Championship Tour (CT) competitors, Fitzgibbons eventually met an on-fire Six time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore in the 35 Minute Final.
Fitzgibbons got busy early posting a number of mid-range scores throughout the bout. She managed an eventual Heat total 14.73 with a display of smooth and powerful rail surfing. Gilmore was left chasing a single wave score of 8.56 but she which she was never able to achieve, gifting Fitzgibbons her second Newcastle Surfest win.
Seed Wilkinson came up against young Italian sensation Leonardo Fioravanti in the Final. Both Surfers had been standing out but it was Wilkinson who had been building serious momentum through the finals posting huge score in the Quarters and Semis. The Final was no different with Wilkinson demolishing the righthand walls with massive vertical backhand re-entries to post two excellent range scores, an 8.83 and a 9.00 to take his first victory in longer than he can remember.
Fioravaranti was in a combination situation (needing two scores) for the entire heat but never gave up until the final siren went. A second at the first QS6,000 of 2016 sets up the young Italian for a big year on the QS, eyeing al all-important spot on the CT.
